No word on the eventual release of Tomboy yet. Fingers crossed for near future. Rumor has it that the reasoning behind all of these singles is to pay for the mastering of the crazy new sounds we'll be hearing in the new album. 31st/Chi can neither confirm nor negate this rumor.
As mentioned in an earlier post last month, Panda Bear has a new single coming out next week on October 19 via Domino. The single is for "You Can Count On Me" with the b-side "Alastian Darn".
“You Can Count On Me” is a shorter tune featuring inspirational and serene harmonies. “Alsatian Darn” is a gorgeous journey through intricate melodies and mesmerizing vocal harmonies that will leave your mind in a sweet, satisfied, daze. I will call his harmonies beautiful, but that still really does them no justice. Much like the "Tomboy" single, the b-side here is my favorite.
If you didn't know that I'm talking about Noah Lennox, a musician who currently resides in Lisbon, Portugal and not those furry bamboo devouring, masked beasts then let it be known now. Panda Bear is a member of Animal Collective but I'm not going to talk much of AnCo in this post. This post is about Panda Bear.
For roughly the past 18 months, there have been rumblings about Panda Bear's follow-up to March of 2007's beautiful and highly acclaimed Person Pitch. Anticipations have been high (to say the least) in waiting for new material from Panda Bear. A year ago this month, Panda Bear gave us our first little taste of new tunes at ATP (All Tomorrow's Parties). Since then he has been debuting new material at his few and infrequent live shows across the globe.
Back in July, Panda Bear officially released his first taste of new material in a 7 inch single for "Tomboy" which also featured the little trip-hop jam, "Slow Motion". Last week Noah announced plans for a new single, You Can Count On Me 7″ with b-side "Alastian Darn", coming out October 19 via Domino. Artwork for it below.
So with these new singles coming out lately it had been generally assumed and even mentioned by Panda Bear himself that the plan was to have a new album out some time in the fall of 2010. Unfortunately, Noah made it sound like in a recent interview with BV and according to his website, that Tomboy is slated for release "near the end of 2010."[2] Lennox has mentioned Tomboy will be a departure from his signature sound on Person Pitch and Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion. About the new direction, Lennox said: "I got tired of the severe parameters of using samplers. Thinking about Nirvana and the White Stripes got me into the idea of doing something with a heavy focus on guitar and rhythm".
The update on the album's release date being pushed back is some what disheartening news as we are all anxious after listening to his wonderful new singles and b-sides as well as some of his new material that he has debuted live. So in a way to try and keep morale high for fellow Panda Bear lovers out there, I have included some new material including this video below via BAL from an emotional show he played at Governor's Island this past Saturday, September 11. Hi all. So this is a topic that I have really wanted to write about for some time now and I have finally found the motivation to make a blog post about it.
For as long as I can remember, my music has defined a part of who I am. My music is different than music a lot of people listen to and that's fine. A lot of people back in high school (even junior high) used to tell me that I listened to weird music. Sometimes it kind of bothered me because I didn't have very many people to share my music with and sometimes I liked that no one really knew the music that I listened to on a regular basis very well. In high school and even these days I know that I am so passionate about the music I love to listen to, that sometimes I force it onto people to listen/try and enjoy my music because they are really nice are close to me and just want to make me happy. But sometimes I know people really need that push into different types of music at a certain point in their life, some times just because they are curious, because they don't really know what they like, because what they like sucks and they kind of just realize it, and sometimes it's just that someone shows you something and you are like "wow, this is really cool, what else do you have like this/that I would like." As much as I love talking about music with people who like the same type of music as me, I have a great amount of respect for someone who tells me that they don't like something when they sincerely don't like it. I enjoy talking to these people just as much. It's what makes things interesting. If you don't like my music, then you probably don't read this blog (very much/at all). For whatever reason it is, maybe because I share very similar tastes/interest in music as a couple of my fellow 31st & Chi writers (Pistol Pete and Lightweight), this blog has become somewhat centered around this 'type' of music, which if had to be labeled would more than likely be referred to as "Indie". Now not of all our posts are about Indie music and I really love the posts that aren't. They keep this blog fresh and make it fun to read for people who aren't necessarily interested in the music.
I don't care what kind of music you listen to. You shouldn't have to care about what kind of music I (or anyone else for that matter) listens to. Listen to music that you like. If you are like me, then to a certain extent, your music defines a part of who you are. I don't like people who pose a (musical) image upon themselves because they think it makes them look cool or want to fit in or really just don't have any original style/tastes in music/anything. This goes for a lot of things, not necessarily just music. Just be yourself, don't be a fuckin' poser. No one likes posers.

Summer is starting to wind up for those of us who have some kind of schooling that we attend in the fall. So I thought I would reflect by posting a nice, random, short inventory of some summer mp3s for y'all to listen to while you chill at home, chill on the road, chill in the office, chill on the boat, chill in your underwear, chill in her underwear, or chill wearing no underwear. Most of these are pretty fresh, while some are from earlier this summer. This is just a random list of songs from the summer that you may have missed, so I thought I would post them.
"Walkabout" is a new one from Atlas Sound (Bradford Cox of Deerhunter) featuring Noah Lennox (Panda Bear) of Animal Collective in gazy, upbeat cheerful tune. One of the best of the summer. I also posted a new one from Nathan Williams (Wavves) as both the tracks he's made this summer have been great, the other being "Mickey Mouse" of course. Volcano Choir is Justin Vernon's (Bon Iver) side project and their new album is to be released this fall. "Island, IS" is the only song I've heard so far, but I dig it. A new one from Radiohead (or so we think, maybe?), a great song from The Almighty Defenders which is a side project from King Kahn and The Black Lips, a newish one from the trippy "glo-fi" artist Washed Out, a great song from Mos Def's latest album, a Simian Mobile Disco song from their upcoming album Temporary Pleasure featuring Jamie Lidell, a crazy hot reggae tune from Major Lazer with a taste of Santigold, and finally a song Animal Collective has been playing at most of their live shows lately that features a hook from a Grateful Dead tune. Hopefully this gives you a little something to listen to over the next week or so. Enjoy!
